Marcie takes a look at Martial Arts, Self-Defence
and Personal Safety for Women

The single most important part of Self Protection is learning to be AWARE of potential dangers.

Women normally have a good deal of common sense in this regard but taking the time to get some formal training can really make difference. Just thinking about and visualizing possible dangers and how to avoid them can help you stay safe.

A simple workshop can help focus the mind on these potential dangers that exist in everyday life:

" Dear Marcie, thank you for your Personal Development sessions with the Upper Sixth over the past few weeks. The feedback from the girls has been very positive and I will pass on your details to our new Head of Sixth for next year..."

Sarah Musgrave
Head of Sixth Form
Malvern Girls College
April 2006

Combining this thought process with the ability to fight back if the worst happens is about as safe as you can get. Many women I speak to have the same attitude regarding their own personal safety. They firmly believe that mugging, assault or rape will not happen to them and most never seek out or train in Self Defence or the Martial Arts. However those that do report an increase in self confidence which in itself is a factor that helps them to keep safe.

So will Martial Arts also help? - Well; Maybe and Maybe not! Maybe if its the right Martial Art, i.e. one that is street effective, not dependent on strength and fitness and taught properly. Then it may help.

If instead, you are looking for a suitable self defence class then I suggest you look for someone with experience of teaching properly researched, simple techniques that work. More importantly techniques that start with an appreciation of the need to practice Awareness and Avoidance. The Instructor should also be able to teach you how to deal with aggressive confrontations, how to use verbal diffusion and how to handle the approach leading up to a possible assault. All of this of course, should be taught alongside what to do if you have to defend yourself in the worst case scenario.
